snowday & things i love.

holy moly snow. so it looks like we did indeed get the heavy snowfall that had been predicted. its been  a while since i've had to treck through snow sooo deep! another thing i haven't had in a while is a snowday, but this time i didn't have to go to work, as opposed to school (which happened a lot when i lived in guelph).
braved the weather to get an americano.

its been a while since i've shared my favourite things, so here's my current list:

1. moomins.
ever since i was little, these guys have been my favourite. growing up, my grandma used to read us the books, and when we were in poland, they used to play the tv show before bedtime. recently, sam got me a book of moomin comics, and i've decided to continue collecting anything and everything moomin!

2. camilla lackberg novels.
since i'm currently not at school, i've all of a sudden found myself reading a ton! i recently started reading camilla lackbergs' novels, and i'm definitely hooked. i've already read four of them. if you read the stieg larssons the girl with the dragon tattoo series, you'll definitely enjoy these books.

3. avocados.
recently, these guys have been making an appearance in most of my meals. i used to only eat them in guacamole, but i'm telling you, they make everything taste better. my favourite is swedish crisp bread with salmon and avocado!

4. my sorrel boots.
with the snow we got this morning, i am sooo happy i decided to buy my sorrel boots. they have changed my experience outdoors. since i have really bad circulation, it doesn't take much for my toes to freeze up and make any walking outside a miserable experience. but now, i continue to do my 45 min walk to work pretty much everyday, and my toes don't hurt :)

5. tassimo.
my tassimo is my saviour every morning before work. i begin my day with an espresso with breakfast, which has become an essential part of my routine. i used to be skeptical as to the quality of the coffee made in the machine, but after trying a similar one at my aunts house in poland, i was sold. the moment i got back to canada, i bought myself the tassimo, and have found that the jacobs and king joe espresso discs make the boldest and most flavorful espresso!

hope everyone is staying warm and dry. lets hope for a less snowy weekend!

my weekend in pictures.

this weekend was pretty quiet. sam had alot of work to catch up on back in waterloo, so we didn't get to hangout this weekend :( but we'll make up for it next week!

i worked saturday, which happened to be a pretty slow day at the store, so i got to read my current crime novel. sunday morning i worked out at the gym and made myself a yummy brunch. the rest of the day i ran some errands and read at a coffee shop :)

i ordered this plate on ebay. for those who don't know, i have a little obsession with anything moomin...
this pup was being extra sweet and calm this weekend.
$ 35.00 for the pup.
always start my day with an espresso.
cream cheese, salmon, pickle, and avocado. my current fav combo.
picked up some fresh coconut for snacking on.
 reading at sublime.
also grabbed a tea at moonbean.
 pink lady.
dinner of noodles with butternut squash, mushrooms, beans, and hummus.
decided to bake spelt carrot poppyseed buns. (i've recently figured out that i'm actually wheat intolerant, not gluten. this allows me to try new flours such as spelt, kamut, and rye!!)
the finished product. sooooooooo goooooood!

hope you had a great weekend!

my weekend looked like this.

on the bus to waterloo.
this guy is pretty pumped to finally go home after being away for weeks!

this week i actually get a proper weekend, where i have a few days off in a row, rather than just sunday. this happens every other week or so, as i switch schedules back and fourth with a co worker so that i get a chance to go visit sam in waterloo!

originally i was going to go to waterloo saturday night after work, but i got really sick at work and decided to stay the night in toronto. but the next morning i was feeling tons better, and sam and i bussed it to the loo :)

no trip is waterloo is complete without a visit to DVLB (Death Valley's Little Brother) a cafe/whiskey bar that not only serves the second best coffee (planet bean in guelph is my all time fav) but they have a wicked assortment of whiskeys for those of you who are looking for something a little stronger. the interior of the DVLB is also in my opinion one of the best designed coffee shops i've seen, and that includes the ones in toronto.

my most beloved americano.

for dinner we decided to do something simple, so we made hummus, arugula, smoked fish, avocado and corn wraps. as you can see below, it was quite a pretty green creation.

that night i also made the best after dinner dessert/snack - lemon yogurt with raspberry jam SOO YUMMY!

i was lucky to get a chance to sleep in a little bit monday morning, and have some breakfast and coffee at DVLB with sam, before he headed out to class.

oh, and i also found the BEST chocolate! seriously, if you get the chance, try some!!! i'm excited to try all the other flavours they have come out with.

i had such a nice weekend, nothing crazy, just spending time with my man :)

scandinavian design.

at first glance, they look like ordinary wood stumps, but in fact they're poufs made from recycled polyester and can be used as a stool, side table, or ottoman. they are designed by Krone Hanssen from Norway, whose website you can find here

happy sunday!

scandinavian design.

so let me begin by confessing that i have always been obsessed with anything and everything scandinavian, in particular it is their design tradition that has always been a great source of inspiration to myself. i'd like to share my favourite, and the most recent creations coming from these scandinavian designers on a weekly basis on the blog!!

on that note, i present you with Hus-I,  an amazing new house both built and designed by torsten ottesjo. not only is it an example of simply great design, but it is integrated into its natural surroundings in both its look, as well as the natural materials from which it is made of.

weekend.

what a crazy warm weekend we had this week! i still can't believe it, and now i'm dreading heading out because it's far from the spring temperatures we've had these past few days...

we tried to make the most of the warm weather on sunday (saturday i was at work all day, so i missed out on any outdoor activities). we started our day with a run! yes, i've recently started running outside and i loveeeeee it!! i used to hate it, or i didn't try too hard and gave up easily. but recently i just went for it, running at a good pace, watching my breathing, and really just enjoying the run. it's been a few weeks now, and i've noticed such an improvement and i definitely want to continue, and perhpas sign up for a run in the summer or fall.

after our run, we had a nice spread of goodies for brunch, including avocado, herring, smoked slamon cream cheese, jams and rye crisp breads. We like euro breakfasts on sunday mornings :) after that we decided to make the most of the warm weather and go for a walk along queen street, in search of a coffee shop to get my caffeine fix. after my delicious americano, we met up with a few friends at arepa cafe (sam's most fav place) and stuffed ourselves with yummy corn cakes filled with all sorts of goodies. actually, i opted for a soup and solo arepa, and after asking the waiter twice whether there was cream in the soup, he came by to inform me that it did in fact contain cream.... soo i had my arepa plain, which i still enjoyed!

since i work saturday, sunday is really the only weekend day i have, so i love it when the day is full of activities and nice weather. i had such a good day, the warm temperature definitely had a lot to do with it, but it was spending time with sam and our good friends that really made the day!!

hope you have a wonderful week :)

christmas.

i know this is a little late, but i've finally gotten around to transferring some photos from christmas to my computer.

this years christmas was pretty much the same as always, but with the addition of my grandma (dad's mum) who flew in from poland to spend the holiday with us. i think this is the first christmas we've spent with her since i was two years old. my other grandma was also here this year, so we had two cooking experts prepping our christmas eve dinner!! sam also joined us for christmas eve dinner, and stayed around for a couple days before heading out to ottawa to see his parents.

this year i received an abundance of kitchen supplies for christmas. i couldn't be any happier :) sam got his very first camera, which i think he got a kick out of!! i think everyone was quite pleased with their gifts this year :)

below i've got a few photos from our christmas eve and christmas day!
